Binckhorst Castle

The Hague is full of surprises. Between modern buildings and industrial areas, places sometimes pop up that you totally do not expect. De Binckhorst Castle is one such place.

A castle in the Binckhorst

In the middle of a neighborhood that was known for offices and industry for years, an ancient castle suddenly stands. And perhaps even more surprising: today, there is no silence here, but the laughter of children.

Binckhorst Castle is a medieval castle, making it one of the oldest buildings in the city. The castle has a rich history. For instance, after the Second World War, it served for a time as an orphanage for children who had lost their parents, and during the war, it was used as a military post. Today, it has a completely different role: a place where children grow up, play, and feel at home.

Working in a castle

For those who work here, every day remains special. Mariska, who is working at the location temporarily, knew immediately that this was no ordinary place. 'I had seen the little castle in a photo and thought: wow, that looks really beautiful.'

Cindy, who has been involved from the very beginning, also recognizes that feeling. 'When you drive up in the morning, you think: oh yes, we really are in something special.'

That realization returns time and again, especially when new parents step inside for the first time and react with surprise to the location.

Old details, new function

Although the castle has been given a modern interpretation, many historical elements have been preserved. Think of old fireplaces, high ceilings, and even a turret with a narrow staircase leading upstairs.

The original fence and other details have also been restored and still give the building its authentic appearance. That combination of old and new creates a unique atmosphere.

A place where children feel at home

What makes this place truly special is the feel of the building. Despite its size and history, the castle has a warm, homey atmosphere.

'Children just feel at home here,' says Cindy. 'It has a small-scale feel, like you're in a house.'

Even the name plays a part in this. For many children, it is not childcare, but simply 'the castle'. 'We are going to the castle,' the staff hear regularly.

That makes the place not only special for adults, but also magical for the youngest visitors.

A hidden gem in development

The Binckhorst is in full swing. Where the area was formerly primarily industrial, life is now increasingly emerging. New homes, shops, and amenities are ensuring that the district is slowly transforming into a lively neighborhood.

Still, the castle remains a place you wouldn't immediately expect. "People cycle past and think: what is this?" says Cindy.

It is precisely that unexpectedness that makes it such a special place.
