The Red Roofs of Berlage

Preservation of Berlage's red roofs, a place in the Scheveningen district where history is preserved

You might be familiar with them: the homes in the Havenkwartier in the Scheveningen district with those distinctive red Berlage roofs. It is a characteristic piece of authentic Scheveningen. The homes on Menninckstraat and the surrounding streets have been part of the neighborhood for years and are more than just a house to many residents. When research was conducted into possible demolition or renovation, residents took action to preserve the unique character of their neighborhood.

The preservation of Berlage's Red Roofs shows how residents can stand up for their neighborhood together. For Martha Verheul and Vasco Roeleveld , that is precisely why this initiative is so important. They see how more and more familiar places are disappearing and wanted to prevent this piece of Scheveningen from being lost as well.

So that it is still a bit authentic and Scheveningen.

Standing up for the neighborhood together

Initiator Esther Verweij explains that Hof Wonen conducted research into the future of the homes. Early on, residents decided to organize themselves into a residents' committee. Together, they discussed the importance of preserving the homes and the neighborhood.

Their efforts paid off. The homes are being renovated and not demolished. This preserves not only the streetscape but also the community that has lived there for years.

More connectedness in the neighborhood

The initiative has not only led to the preservation of the homes but also to a greater sense of community among residents. During the process, neighbors got to know each other better and new forms of cooperation emerged. For instance, AEDs were arranged for the four streets involved, among other things.

As a result, the impact of the initiative extends beyond just the homes themselves. It has also contributed to a stronger community in the neighborhood.

A remarkable result

According to the residents, what makes this initiative so special is that it succeeded in keeping the neighborhood together. In many places, existing homes disappear and communities become dispersed. Here, that continued to be prevented.

Berlage's Red Roofs therefore form not only a recognizable part of Scheveningen, but also an example of what residents can achieve together. Martha, Vasco, and Esther are visibly proud of it.
