Conditions of participation – Through the Hague Lens

Welcome to Through the Hague Lens, the film competition in which The Hague is central as an international city of peace and justice. We challenge you to positive message to convey: show hope, connection and creativity in your short film. Below you can read all the conditions for participation, technical requirements and information about submission and judging.

  1. Conditions of participation
  • Participants must live, work or study in The Hague.
  • Participation is open to all ages.
  • You can participate individually or submit a project as a group.
  1. Film criteria
  • The film may be a maximum of 3 minutes duration (including intro and credits).
  • We are looking for films or animations in which hope for world peace is central and in which you portray The Hague in a recognizable and creative way as an international city of peace and justice.
  • Show The Hague in a recognizable way at least once
  • There are two categories:
    • Filmed on mobile: for films made with smartphones or simple equipment.
    • Professional equipment: for films made with more advanced tools.
  • All styles are allowed: documentary, fiction, animation, experimental, vlog style, and so on.
  1. Technical and legal specifications
  • Best practices: MP4 of MOV
  • Minimum resolution: 1920 × 1080 (Full HD)
  • Language: Dutch or English, or provided with subtitles in one of these languages.
  • Use only original material of royalty free content. Use of copyrighted material without permission is prohibited.
  • People who are recognizable in the image must permission have given. This can be done by making them unrecognizable (e.g. blur, silhouette) or by means of a written consent form.
  • Participants are responsible for obtaining their own consent and may be asked to provide a declaration.
  1. Submission and deadlines
  • Submissions can be made via the website of BeHague, using the registration form
  • You can upload your film via WeTransfer
  • Deadline for submission: June 1, 2025
  • Results and award ceremony: June 10, 2025
  1. Evaluation and selection
  • The jury consists of film professionals, creatives and representatives from The Hague.
  • The entries will be judged on:
    • Creativity and originality
    • Connection with the theme 'The Hague, city of peace and justice'
    • Technical implementation (image, sound, editing)
    • Impact and message
  1. Awards and recognition
  • The best entries will be shown during a public screening in The Hague.
  • The films will be shared via (inter)national media and via the channels of the organisation and its partners.
  • There will be one compilation video made from the strongest entries.
  • Winners will be judged on the above criteria. There are three cash prizes to be won:
    1st prize: €1000
    • 2st prize: €500
    • 3st prize: €250
  1. User rights
  • By participating in this competition you grant the Municipality of The Hague and its partners the right to use your entry for promotional purposes.
  • This means that you give permission to distribute your video via online channels, social media, events and other communication tools of the organization.
  • The creators of course remain the owners of their work and will, where possible, be mentioned upon publication.
