On the occasion of the NATO summit on 24 and 25 June, we had the World Forum rebuilt in LEGO. The enormous model was on display at various locations in the city, at the Liberation Festival, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, HagaZiekenhuis and finally at the exhibition 'Stadtrots' in the Atrium of the city hall. For that exhibition, we were still looking for constructions that we could exhibit. We organised the LEGO construction competition 'Contribute to peace and justice with LEGO' and invited residents of The Hague - young and old - to make a LEGO construction about peace and justice themselves.
People could build at home or come along to one of the Meedoe afternoons that we organized in the city. Children came to LEGO-en at the community center de Mussen, Youth Center 'T Plekkie, Community Center Bouwlust and Stichting Schets. We eventually received 300 entries.
The professional jury, consisting of Hague comedian Sjaak Bral and LEGO masters Ellen Pennings and Sander Schulp, selected the six best constructions. Alderman Saskia Bruines announced the winners. In the category children up to 12 years, Phénix won the first prize, followed by Basil (2nd prize) and Jippe (3rd prize). In the category teenagers and adults from 13 years, Edo won the first prize, followed by Robert (2nd prize) and Raphaël (3rd prize). The six constructions were exhibited in the city hall until 20 June 2025 and the winners all went home with a nice prize (LEGO credit). And the LEGO model will get a place in the World Forum.
Phénix won with his construction 'Missing Piece' in the category children up to 12 years. He made a heart of LEGO with a missing piece in it. He left out the letter 'P' in the word peace. A missing piece of peace. Phénix hopes that the world will soon find that piece of peace again.
Edo made the construction From Palace to Pallets. He won the first prize in the category teenagers and adults from 13 years. With his construction Edo shows the different sides of the city. He built the Peace Palace and the courthouse that refer to the theme of the competition 'peace and justice'. He also shows how the people of The Hague celebrate their freedom. With a bonfire and coziness on the terrace.
During the Hague LEGO summit, a LEGO building competition surrounding the NATO summit, participants enthusiastically built their peace and justice LEGO creation. Not everyone can buy LEGO, which is why the municipality is collecting LEGO with Toys Up, Byewaste and Quiet Den Haag until 7 September. Do you have LEGO left over that you would like to give away? Schedule a collection time at byewaste.nl. Read more about the fundraiser.
